A warm welcome to a fabulous — almost —  brand new year from Uncharted Africa Safari co.

There has been a lot going on at Uncharted Africa, and we’re getting the 2012 ball rolling with news and updates from Jack’s Camp, San Camp, Camp Kalahari, Planet Baobab and our Mobile Safari Expeditions.

The entertaining, if perennially controversial, British Travel Writer, AA Gill recently spent time on safari with Uncharted Africa, reporting on his adventures in an extremely amusing article for The UK Sunday Times (22 January). According to Mr. Gill, a seasoned professional luxury traveler who has done and seen it all, the reason one should choose an Uncharted Africa Mobile Safari Expedition is because: “Fly camping has the essential element of serendipity, tricky and challenging chance. Each day, you begin with a rough plan and crossed fingers, but what happens between dawn and dinner is down to caprice and fortune. You need a good guide, and with Ralph Bousfield, you’ll be with one of the best in Africa.”

San Camp’s 2011 soft opening created a lot of excitement and the camp was complimented by Gill who described it as “A spectacularly comfortable, Edwardian-expedition caravanserai of white tents and long views.”

San Camp was also featured in the January Travel issue of The Robb Report and in the South African interior design publication House & Leisure. San Camp will be in full swing this season, welcoming Guests from the 16 April - 30 October 2012.

We are proud to announce that Jack’s Camp has made it onto the Conde Nast Traveller UK and USA Gold Lists! Thank you so much to all our Guests for their continued and enthusiastic support. And, after a very silent, and secret inspection by another professional luxury traveler, Jack’s Camp has also been featured in the Andrew Harper Hideaway Report for February 2012.

Given all these accolades, anticipation with regard to our camps is now at an all-time high and to ensure we keep on giving our Guests what they never knew they wanted, we’re introducing an in-depth Bushmen experience at Jack’s and San Camps.

Due to popular demand, and the enthusiastic collaboration of the Bushmen of the Far Western Kalahari, Guests will now be able to spend more time with these fascinating people and be able to enjoy a far more intimate and comprehensive experience while on safari at these two camps. We will be sending out more information about this new development, but safe to say, this will make a four night stay all the more worthwhile!

But, it’s not all just all about 4x4’s and high level jacks out there,  Jack’s Camp, Camp Kalahari and Planet Baobab were selected as the backdrop for well known French magazine Gala’s Africa inspired fashion shoot. Needless to say, it created quite a stir, (especially) amongst the male camp population, who were all volunteering to assist in any way possible! We’ll be sharing some of the highlights of their stay as soon as the article is published!

Planet Baobab is a veritable nursery at the moment. Spring has sprung in a soon to be big (about 3000 years) way. It’s hard to believe that baobabs were once also babies… However, rains bring new life, and we’re proud to announce that baby baobab saplings are popping up all over the place and, in a few hundred years, they will be part of our beautiful baobab forest!

Baobabs aren’t the only ones thriving in the Makgadikgadi, the meerkats (tarts that they are!) are breeding like rabbits and we have hundreds of the things crawling all over our Guests! Guests have been warned that if they sit really still, and shut up, a meerkat will most probably use them as a sentry post.  Guests will just have to grin and bear it! We’ll keep you posted – as will the meerkats!
